Dimethicone

1. What is Dimethicone?

Dimethicone is a silicone-based polymer widely used in dermatology and skincare. As one of the most common moisturizing agents in modern formulations, it forms a lightweight, non-greasy barrier on the skin that helps retain moisture, smooth texture, and protect against environmental aggressors. It’s the second most used occlusive in moisturizers after petrolatum — and for good reason: it’s effective, versatile, and very well tolerated.
Though synthetic in origin, dimethicone is non-sensitizing and non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores), making it a popular choice in products for sensitive or acne-prone skin. It’s approved by the FDA as a skin protectant and often used in both medical and cosmetic-grade skincare.

2. How does Dimethicone Work?

When applied to the skin, Dimethicone creates an invisible, breathable film that offers multiple benefits:

  • Moisture retention: Traps water in the stratum corneum and reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL), keeping skin hydrated.
  • Skin-smoothing: Instantly improves the feel of rough or flaky skin by filling in surface gaps, giving a silky texture.
  • Protection: Shields skin from friction, irritants, and harsh environmental elements without suffocating the pores.
  • Improves product feel: Adds spreadability and smooth application to creams and lotions without heaviness or greasiness.

3. Benefits for Specific Skin Conditions

Dimethicone’s benefits are especially valuable in treating or preventing dry, sensitive, or compromised skin. Here’s how it helps in common skin conditions:

  • Dry and rough areas: Ideal for hands, heels, elbows, and knees where skin is thick, dry, or prone to cracking. It softens and conditions for smoother, more comfortable skin.
  • Sensitive skin: Because it doesn’t penetrate deeply or interact with immune cells, Dimethicone helps reduce irritation and reactivity without triggering inflammation.
  • Irritated or over-treated skin: Helps repair the skin barrier after exposure to exfoliants, harsh cleansers, or cold weather by reinforcing surface protection and reducing further damage.
  • Eczema-prone skin: Approved by the FDA as a protectant for eczema, it calms itching, soothes discomfort, and prevents moisture loss — essential in flare-up prevention and daily management.

4. Dimethicone in Metabase Cream

In Metabase Cream, Dimethicone is one of the core barrier-protecting ingredients. It works synergistically with Urea, Panthenol, and Ceramides to deliver deep hydration and barrier support. While Urea and Panthenol draw in moisture and calm irritation, Dimethicone seals it in and helps shield the skin from dryness, cracking, and external irritants.
Its smooth, non-greasy feel makes Metabase Cream ideal for daily use, especially on areas prone to dryness and friction such as the hands, feet, elbows, and knees.
